At Wisbroek, we are always looking for ways to improve our products to meet the natural needs of birds. Insects are an important source of protein. One of the ingredients we add with conviction because of its many benefits is the Black Soldier Fly larvae – also known as BSF larvae, Calciworm or Phoenix worm. But why exactly this larvae?
Why BSF larvae?
BSF larvae offer a balanced mix of nutrients. For example, compared to other commonly used insects such as mealworms, BSF larvae have:
- More fiber – The crude fiber supports digestion and contributes to healthy intestinal flora.
- High protein content – Essential for growth, muscle building and recovery.
- Lower fat content – A healthy energy balance without excess fat storage.
- Rich in calcium – For strong bones, healthy muscles and strong eggshells.
- Correct calcium-phosphorus ratio – Thanks to their phosphorus content, which is often lacking in other insects, BSF larvae are one of the few that offer a proper calcium-phosphorus balance.
